Sophie--I feel the same way about friendships with black women. Your phrase "mutual exotification" is spot-on: Two black female friends of mine describe being seen as "sexy and exotic", but not as anyone men would introduce to their parents.

Friendships with black women are especially important to me now, given the way our very different experiences intersect in so many ways. Things like prejudice concerning what we innately are and our mutual exotification at least have their positive aspect in helping enrich the dialogues.
The thought of being a black trans woman is deeply not one I'd care to dwell on, if only from the point of view of limited life expectancy.

I am glad to hear you say "I don't think a government should have any say at all in marriage. All couples should get the equivalent of a domestic partnership agreement and, if they want to marry in a church or wherever, let them. But marriage in a religious institution should not confer tax and other benefits married heterosexual couples currently enjoy." I have been saying this for years. The only thing that I would change is that it should be called a civil union not a domestic partnership agreement and of course it should carry all of the rights, privileges and responsibilities that marriage currently carries.

Do find it particularly strange that so few trans women ever write about second puberty. In terms of acceptance, I personally find that most cis people are both surprised and more willing to validate our transitions when told about it.
Didn't hate so much as mostly ignore the first time around. The second has been far more involving and,in a sense, more familiar in terms of so many cognitive interchanges between conscious and unconscious functions.

I will do, and I appreciate the offer. I'm still trying to sort everything out in my head - there's so much to unravel at this point, and it's a process that will take years and years (on top of the thirty years that I've already gone through where I have known that there is something not quite right.)

But it doesn't have to be solved overnight, and there's plenty of time to think this through properly, not matter what the outcome - I'm just glad to read the story of someone going through this close to my age.

Sophie, you make very good points. I hadn't thought of the traumatic accident scenario, though I'm sure people have had genital damage from them.

Now you got me to thinking about women who get surgery to repair mutilated genitals. (Marci Bowers, who did my GRS, also does that surgery free of charge.) I'm sure something like that could set a precedent.

Also, your point about altering the terms to cis people makes sense: After all, there are actually very few of us compared to just about any other group of people. And not all of us choose to have surgery, or even hormone therapy.

Might be rather better than you're stating. Surgery for genital reconstruction after a traumatic accident, for example, is normally allowed and might well be taken as a precedent for GRS. And whilst insurance companies could alter terms to cis people, the amount of money involved may be small enough so it wouldn't really be worth doing.

Freya, I agree that she is an enemy of the working poor (and a lot of other people) in this country. I didn't feel I could cover that aspect of her work in this post, but I may write about it at some point.

As for her graduating Fordham: It is indeed a Jesuit-run school. However, many people have graduated from it without becoming transphobic, or bigots of any other stripe, along the way. While I do agree that the Church is run by bigots, I think that she--and other Second-Wave Feminists--were affected by it in a particular way, which I want to explore. Why are they such prejudiced, hateful people, while other Catholics aren't?
